After a couple of instances of water contamination in the United States, most prominently the crisis in Flint, Michigan, it became quite clear that many governments around the world weren’t doing enough in terms of regular water testing. If the water in Flint, Michigan were being tested as regularly as it need to be, then the lead contamination and subsequent poisoning of the people living in the city never would have happened. While they were testing the water in Flint to some degree, it wasn’t often enough and it clearly wasn’t frequent enough.
It wasn’t until after that incident that people all around the US began to test their drinking water. It became quite clear rather quickly that much of the drinking water in the US was contaminated with various toxins and microbes, and often the levels of contamination were much higher than organizations like the EPA said were safe. If a country like the United States isn’t testing their water frequently enough, then you can bet that there are other countries around the world that aren’t doing as much as they need to be doing either. While there are certainly countries out there that take water contamination much more seriously than the US, there are plenty others who don’t do as much as even the US. Given environmental protections in the US are greater than those in many other countries as well, it’s safe to assume that huge numbers of people around the world are drinking water that’s not safe for consumption. When you add this number of people to the billions of people that have never truly had access to clean drinking water, the water quality crisis around the world only gets worse.
Fortunately, there are lots of companies and organizations out there that offer free water testing to municipalities and even foreign countries. These companies and organizations offer their services to local governments and foreign governments to help them ensure that their drinking water is safe for their people to drink. It truly is the responsibility of both federal governments and local governments to ensure that the water people are drinking is safe for them to drink. As was learned during the Flint water crisis, even governments in an advanced country like the US are failing their people when it comes to water quality. It’s time for governments to wake up and for people to get access to the clean drinking water they deserve.
If you work for a local government or even if you’re just a concerned citizen, hiring a private company to test the drinking water in your city is never a bad idea. It’s a great way to find out whether your water is safe for you and your family to drink, and if it’s not these companies can often guide you on what needs to be done. Hire a company like Nova Biologicals and have your water tested. Knowing what’s in your water is the best way to hold your government accountable, and an accountable government is a government that takes water quality seriously.
